Is the Le Mieux Saddle Cover Really Waterproof? | The Rhiview

The Le Mieux Ride-On Saddle Cover is a popular choice for equestrians hoping to keep their saddles clean and dry during a ride, but just how waterproof is it? In this review, I put it to the test (read: absolutely soak it with a hosepipe). Shall we begin?

What Is The Le Mieux Ride On Saddle Cover?

Designed for use in wet weather, The LeMieux ProKit Ride On Saddle Cover covers the entire saddle and features a silicone grip seat, making riding in the wet easy whilst protecting the saddle from the elements. It also has stirrup slits for easy access and adjustable elastic drawstring design for perfect fit. It’s currently on sale at Equus and is available in GP and Dressage cuts.

So, Is It Really Waterproof?

Test 1: The Spray Bottle

Before I take this out in a proper shower, I wanted to see whether the saddle cover was actually waterproof, firstly using a spray bottle filled with water. See how I got in below:

Test 2: The Hosepipe Test

Not content with the spray bottle, my audience soon asked me to REALLY test the waterproofing capabilities of the Ride-On Saddle cover by quite literally drenching it with a hosepipe. Watch below:

Conclusion:

So, we know it’s waterproof. Is it worth spending £40 on the Le Mieux Ride-On Saddle Cover? In my opinion, yes. Having seen its waterproofing capabilities and how comfortable it is to ride in, it certainly gets my vote from a practicality point of view. The other thing to consider when weighing up whether to spend the money is the cost of your tack. Water has a detrimental effect on tack: rain soaked tack causes the fibres to swell, which can permanently damage the leather and wet tack that is dried to fast in a hot tackroom can make leather brittle and more likely to break. If you have expensive tack, or frequently ride in the rain, I would definitely recommend this product.
